What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis occurs when the open spaces within the spine narrow, compressing the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots. Many individuals find that symptoms temporarily improve when leaning forward or sitting down, as this posture opens up the spinal canal.

Symptoms by Spinal Region

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (Lower Back)

  • Lower back pain
  • Pain that travels into one or both buttocks or legs (sciatica)
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the legs or feet
  • Numbness or weakness in the legs
  • Leg cramps during walking
  • Difficulty walking or standing for long periods
  • Pain relief when sitting or leaning forward (such as leaning over a shopping cart)

Cervical Spinal Stenosis (Neck)

  • Neck pain
  • Pain radiating into shoulders or arms
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or arms
  • Weakness in hands or arms
  • Difficulty with fine motor tasks (buttoning clothes, writing)
  • Poor balance and frequent stumbling or falls

Common Causes

  • Aging and natural wear and tear
  • Arthritis of the spine and bone spurs
  • Thickened ligaments and herniated discs
  • Previous spinal trauma or congenital spinal narrowness

When to Seek Immediate Medical Care

  • Sudden weakness in both legs or arms
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Numbness around the groin or buttocks (saddle numbness)
  • Rapidly worsening weakness or loss of balance
