What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is an overuse injury that causes pain on the outside of the elbow. It occurs when the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the lateral epicondyle (the bony bump on the outer elbow)—most commonly the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB)—become irritated, micro-torn, or degenerated from repetitive movements.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain on the outer elbow
  • Pain when gripping objects or shaking hands
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain when extending the wrist or lifting objects

Common Causes and Risk Factors

  • Repetitive arm actions: Racket sports, typing, carpentry, painting, plumbing, and precision assembly work.
  • Improper sports technique or using heavy or ill-fitted tools.
  • Rapidly increasing training frequency or manual workload without adequate conditioning.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

  • Physical examination: Palpation over the lateral epicondyle and resisted wrist extension tests.
  • Imaging (if needed): X-rays to check for arthritis or bone spurs; musculoskeletal ultrasound or MRI to assess tendon degeneration.

Treatment and Rehabilitation

  • Conservative care: Activity modification, ice application, and counterforce elbow braces.
  • Physical therapy: Eccentric forearm strengthening, wrist extensor stretching, and soft tissue mobilization.
  • Medical interventions: Targeted injections or regenerative therapies for persistent cases.
