What is Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a common musculoskeletal condition caused by trigger points in muscles. These tight, sensitive knots cause localized pain and referred pain across other areas of the body.

Common Symptoms

  • Deep, aching muscle pain
  • Small, hard knots palpable in muscle tissue
  • Pain that radiates to distant areas
  • Muscle stiffness, tightness, and reduced range of motion
  • Headaches originating from neck or shoulder tension
  • Fatigue and disrupted sleep

Trigger Point vs Normal Muscle Pain

  • Trigger point pain: Specific knots in taut muscle bands, radiates pain to other areas, sharp and reproduces pain when pressed, can persist for weeks to months.
  • Regular muscle pain: Generalized across an area, stays local, mild tenderness, resolves within a few days.

Common Trigger Point Referral Patterns

  • Upper Trapezius: Pain in neck, base of skull, temples, and behind the eyes.
  • Levator Scapulae: Pain in neck, shoulder, and along the shoulder blade border.
  • Rhomboids: Deep aching pain between the shoulder blades.
  • Lumbar Paraspinals: Pain in the lower back, buttocks, and hips.
  • Gluteus Medius: Pain in the buttock radiating down the side of the leg.

Treatment and Self-Care

  • Physical approaches: Physical therapy, manual trigger point release, dry needling, deep tissue massage, heat and ice therapy.
  • Lifestyle and ergonomics: Posture improvement, frequent movement breaks, stress management, hydration, and sleep hygiene.
  • Self-care: Daily stretching exercises, foam roller, and massage balls.
